Incorparating Human Factors into Roadway Design and Crash Diagnostics

In this course, participants will gain an understanding of the impact of human factors in transportation systems and learn how to incorporate human factors in roadway design and operations.

Learning Objectives

By the end of this training, the students should:

• Understand the overall concept of human factors and the impacts of human factors on traffic system design and operations from both driver and pedestrian perspectives
• Be able to describe the principles/practices guiding the roadway design considering the influence of human factors
• Be well versed with human factors characteristics and how they are involved in the traffic safety analysis (e.g. gap acceptance)
• Obtain hand-on experience in analyzing human factors through case studies of safety and design impact traffic safety

Content Outline

By the end of this training, the students should:

• Overview of human factors in transportation system (characteristics and limitations of road users: drivers and pedestrians)
• Applications of human factors in the transportation engineering field
• Impacts of human factors on traffic system design and operations
• Scenario-based case studies/exercises on a variety of human factors related areas (visibility and lighting, driver assistance, safety problem identification, reducing unsafe behaviors, etc.)
• New topics that are outside of typical curriculum, such as ADA compliance, Human centric design concept, etc.
